WHAT IS TEACHING


Teaching is a social process which causes a learner to learn and acquire desired knowledge and skills to attain some predetermined goals.


Teaching is different from Conditioning, Training, Instructions and Indoctrination.



OBJECTIVES OF TEACHING :


1. Facilitate learning and acquisition of knowledge. 2. Improve the learning skills. 3. To ensure some kind of transformation in students. 4. Shape the behavior and conduct of students. 5. To enable the students to become better members of society. 6. Formation of a belief.


CHARACTERISTICS OF TEACHING


1. Teaching is an art as well as science. 2. It is an interactive process of learning and development. 3. It is Social in nature. Teaching is by the society and for the society. 4 Teaching leads to a desired change in the behavior of the student. 5. It is observable, measurable and modifiable. 6. It is a continuous process. 7. Teaching is both a conscious and an unconscious process. 8. It involves various forms of teaching. 9. Teaching is a professional activity. It is a skilled occupation.


LEVELS OF TEACHING

Memory Level Of Teaching


: Herbart is the main proponent of memory level of teaching. : This is the 1st level of teaching. : It is also called Thoughtless Teaching because it does not focus on developing the thinking abilities of the students. : The focus is only on memorization. : The learning or the knowledge is factual in nature. : This is usually used in lower classes. : It is very time consuming and the outcome is not that great.


Understanding Level Of Teaching

: Morrison is the main proponent of understanding level of teaching. :This level comes between the memory level and reflective level. : There is a moderate level of thoughtful behavior. : It requires higher level of mental process and is a pre-requisite for reflective level of teaching. : Focus is on developing cognitive abilities of the students. : It enables the students to think, analyze interpret and draw inferences.


Reflective Level Of Teaching


: Hunt is the main proponent of reflective level of teaching. : It is also called introspective level of teaching and is the highest level of teaching. : A student can attain this level only after going through the first two levels. : Reflective level follows a problem centric approach wherein students undertake some research to solve a problem and come to a conclusion. : Students are most active in this level as the teacher does not force his knowledge on the students but helps them in developing their own thinking abilities.


BASIC REQUIRMENTS OF TEACHING


The following are the four basic requirements of teaching:














1. Teacher

  • Teacher is the person who transfers his knowledge and information to the students because he has mastery over the subject.

  • He uses an effective language to ensure that the student is able to understand the subject completely.

  • Teacher should be well qualified and should have adequate skills to bring about a desired change in the behavior of the student.

2. Learner

  • Learner is the person who is at the receiving end, to whom the knowledge is transferred by the teacher.

  • He has to make all the efforts from his side, co-operate and try to get as much information as possible from the teacher.

  • Learner is dependent on the teacher for all his learning.

3. Subject

  • Subject is the branch of knowledge that the teacher transfers to the learner.

  • Subject is generally decided by the teacher but the learner can also contribute in this process.

  • Teacher should teach the subject in an interesting way so that the interest of the learner is maintained.

  • Teacher may use various methods to make the subject interesting and easy for the learner to understand.

4. Environment

  • There must be a suitable environment for the teaching process to happen.

  • Teacher must create a positive environment wherein he can nurture the student and the learner is able to grow and develop his skills.
